As well, transgender youth number about .07% of our students. Florida school districts are generally beginning to 'thaw' related to acceptance of LGBQ and T youth and adults. Yet, our state's students are still struggling with resilience due to continued stereotypes, bias, lack of appropriate and critically needed support at school and challenges at home. Concernedly, only 18-20% of school districts across the nation offer LGBTQ professional development training to school officials or staffs. Please join the statewide Safe Schools Director of Equality Florida, De Palazzo, and Principal Steve Frazier for the latest research, powerful, contemporary video and action steps for 'how to' ensure our LGBQ and T student and families both thrive and soar in our schools.

"Latinos in Action." The model for Latino youth engagement, capturing Personal Assets, Excellence in Education, Service, and Leadership. This program is offered as an elective course and empowers Hispanic/Latinos teens to graduate from high school, join extra-curricular activities, honors programs, and AP classes, as well as preparing them for continuing education. The program has a main focus on service, leadership, college/career readiness, and personal assets that student bring with them. Awarded the White House Bright Spot for Hispanic Education by the White House Initiative on Excellence in Hispanic Education, It has a 95-98% graduation rate, and 85% matriculation to college. LIA works with Latino students that may be first, second, or third generation, incorporating Leadership, Service, and Educational elements in the curriculum, while including English Language Acquisition strategies in the curriculum. The curriculum also aligns with WIDA standards. As it has grown, LIA has incorporated essential technology including using a Learning Management System to host the online curriculum, online vocabulary cards, helping students create an online e-portfolio, and more in order to meet the needs and interests of the upcoming generation.
