Quote of the Day

“These are the steps required for any school improvement effort: (1) define a need based on analysis of data; (2) study possible solutions shown effective by scientific validation; (3) implement solutions through (a) professional development, (b) acquiring resources (c) coaching and collaboration (d) field testing; (4) evaluating the results of the field test through formative and summative assessments (5) discussion of the assessment findings and deciding what to do about them next. If it works, spread it. If it doesn’t, try something else but be sure the reason it didn’t work isn’t because you didn’t implement the solution in the way it was proven to be effective. ”

Big Idea Tips and Do it Tips

Mike

BIT:    The late Ernest L. Boyer, highly respected president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, wrote “you cannot have an island of academic excellence in a sea of community indifference.” Schools tend to be most successful when they partner with the community.

DIT:    Find ways to actively involve parents.  Schools with such programs outperform similar programs without parent and family involvement.

DIT:    Find ways to transform your school into a true community school, to focus on educating the entire community and offer year-round services for students and families that benefit children, parents and the school as a whole.

DIT:    Use business relationships to increase access to new technology, greater opportunities for professional development for teachers and other staff, and to help reduce student violence, truancy, suspension and dropout rates.
