Dear School and District Leader:
What will it take for you and your faculty to meet the challenges of the Florida Secondary School Redesign Act? How would you like to see the cutting edge ideas described by Dr. Willard Daggett, President of the International Center for Leadership in Education, come to life in your school? How would you like the assistance of an experienced coach to help you and your staff create a 21st century innovative learning environment that promotes high achievement for all students? This letter describes an opportunity to enhance your efforts to achieve successful outcomes at your middle/high school.
Florida Secondary School Redesign Initiative
The Florida Association of School Administrators (FASA) and the Florida and the Islands Comprehensive Center at ETS (FLICC), are co-sponsoring an exciting collaborative effort with their partners, the International Center for Leadership in Education and the David C. Anchin Center - the Florida Secondary School Redesign Initiative (SSRI). This initiative will focus directly on the goals most important to you, including:
- Addressing the mandates of the Florida Secondary School Redesign Act;
- Developing the capacity of secondary school and district leaders to guide the change process, educate all students and promote rigor, relevance and relationships in the secondary school curriculum;
- Providing support for implementing the Secondary School Redesign components through the services of a trained coach; and
- Offering a forum to share best practices in the areas of secondary redesign, educational leadership, organizational change and systems thinking.
SSRI Participant Selection
Many Florida secondary schools have already joined Dr. Daggett’s Successful Practices Network, a not-for-profit membership organization designed for good schools that want to become even better. This network places the resources of the International Center for Leadership in Education at the fingertips of the member schools. We understand that resources alone cannot sustain change and reform. Only intensive follow-up, coaching and collaboration will build a school’s capacity to make the lasting changes that will serve the needs of students. The Secondary School Redesign Initiative will:
- Select a cohort from the schools in the Florida Successful Practices Network;
- Support the systematic implementation of school-specific criteria that will move them from “promising to proven”;
- Build models of success from which others can learn;
- Build school capacity through School Leadership Teams comprised of 6-8 representatives selected by the schools.
A maximum of 50 schools will be selected for the first cohort, with additional schools phased in over the next three years. SSRI is seeking a diverse pool of schools balanced geographically across the regions of Florida. Consideration of the overall balance of the cohort will inform the selection of the individual schools.
Benefits for SSRI Schools
Schools selected for the SSRI cohort will be provided assistance through these mechanisms:
1. Regional Workshops - A series of three regional workshops will be held throughout the year to provide training to support the implementation of school level action plans. Executive leaders from the International Center for Leadership in Education will conduct these workshops. SSRI schools will also be able to work with their coach and network with other SSRI schools.
2. Coaching Support - Each participating school will be assigned a coach from the state of Florida who has been trained in Dr. Daggett’s Successful Practices Network and who has taken a leadership role in secondary redesign in Florida. The coach will be available to assist the school in using the learning criteria as atool for secondary school redesign and to facilitate requests for information, advice and best practices. Coaches will work with schools onsite and spend additional time with the Leadership Team at the regional workshops.
3. Curriculum Tools - Participating schools will have access to online curriculum development tools developed by the International Center for Leadership in Education.
4. Annual Conference - Schools participating in the Secondary School Redesign Initiative will be invited to participate in an annual Florida Secondary School Conference where leading edge research will be presented on secondary redesign. Participating schools will have an opportunity to network and share effective implementation strategies.
If your school is ready to build the consensus needed to chart your unique path to systemic school redesign based on the latest research, and you share a passion to commit to these changes for your students and your community, we invite you to share this information with your faculty and apply for this special initiative. If you have any questions pertaining to the Secondary Schools Redesign Initiative, or the Florida Successful Practices Network, please direct them to us.
