STATE BRAIN BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP

The FCNHS Brain Brawl competition is a one (1) day single elimination tournament and encompasses all academic subjects, including, but not limited to art, music, language arts, mathematics, the sciences, and social studies. This competition will be conducted at a centralized location, decided on by the Executive Director, on a designated Saturday in March at which time the state champion will be decided. All registration information, i.e. date, time, and locations will be posted on the FCNHS website www.fasa.net/fcnhs.
Teams: Each school team shall consist of no more than eight (8) and no fewer than three (3) members. All members must be listed on the Brain Brawl Team Eligibility Sheet. In the event a chapter indicates more than four (4) team members, the additional team members will be listed as alternates. The minimum number of team members that must be present at a match for a team to compete is three (3).
Eligibility: Any school is eligible to compete providing all team members are members in good standing of their school’s National Honor Society and, the school chapter is in good standing with both their District Chapter and the Florida Chapter of the National Honor Society. Teams will compete in pairs using a lockout buzzer system.
Travel Arrangements: Each school must make their own travel arrangements and is financially responsible for any food, transportation and/or hotel expenses. State Competition Commitment: Deadlines set by the Florida Chapter of the National Honor Society are final and the following registration rules apply:
- If a school chapter fails to registers ten (10) school days prior to the competition they are not eligible to participate.
- If a school registers a team but fails to show up or cancel ten (10) school days prior to the competition, that chapter will be fined $50.00.
Sponsors: Each team must be accompanied by a sponsor or alternative faculty member (not a parent). Teams not accompanied by a sponsor or designated alternate will forfeit their match(s). Sponsors or their designated representative may be asked to read questions.
Substitutions: A player may be replaced by a substitute once during a match but cannot re-enter the match after the substitution. Substitutions may be made only during the intermission of a match. Only students listed on the Brain Brawl Eligibility List may be substitute players.
Matches: Each match consists of two halves. Each half consists of ten (10) toss-up questions worth ten (10) points each and ten (10) bonus questions (of one or more parts) each worth a total of twenty (20) points. The winning team is the team with the most points at the end of the second half of the match. In the event of a tie, a “Sudden Death” method will be used: toss-up questions only will be asked. The first team to score points will be the winner of the match. (Note: If a team interrupts the question and answers incorrectly, the other team scores five (5) points and is therefore the winner of the match.) Each team must be ready to compete at the designated time. Teams will be given a ten-minute grace period for late arrival. After this, the match is forfeited.
Toss-up Questions: Toss-up questions are to be answered by individuals, that is, no discussion is allowed. To answer the question, a player must buzz in on the lockout buzzer system within five (5) seconds of the end of the reading of the question or ten (10) seconds if the question involves computation. Once the player has buzzed in, five (5) seconds are allowed for the player to begin the answer unless computation is involved; in that case, ten (10) seconds. Only during math questions are players allowed to use pencil and paper. A team will be immediately disqualified if any team member uses additional aid, which is not permitted during a toss-up bonus question.
If the answer given is correct, that player’s team receives ten (10) points and the exclusive right to answer a bonus question.
If the answer is incorrect, or the player fails to answer the question in the allotted time, the question is re-read and the opposing team is given the exclusive right to answer the question. There is no discussion on a toss-up question re-reading. A correct answer then earns this team the exclusive right to answer a bonus question. However, if the toss-up question is answered incorrectly, or the team fails to answer within the allotted time, play continues with the next toss-up question.
If a player buzzes in before the moderator completes the question, the moderator will stop reading the question for an answer. If the player answers incorrectly, or fails to answer within the allotted time, five (5) points will be awarded to the opposing team, and that team will then have the exclusive right to answer the question after it is reread. A correct answer is scored in the normal fashion. (Note that this only applies the first time the question is read; the second team may interrupt the re-reading of the question and answer incorrectly with no penalty).
If a team discusses a toss-up question, five (5) points will be awarded to the opposing team and that team will then have the exclusive right to answer the question after it is re-read.
If neither team buzzes in within the allotted time to give an answer, play continues with the next toss-up question.
Bonus Questions: A bonus question is to be answered exclusively by a team that has correctly answered a toss-up question. Discussion among team members is allowed; however, only the team captain’s first answer will be taken.
Bonus questions vary in subject and number of parts. Each bonus question will be read twice: first, the question is read in its entirety with no pauses between the parts, then the question is re-read part by part. The answering team will be given five (5) seconds, ten (10) seconds for a computation question, to answer each part.
If in the opinion of the moderator a team member other than the captain begins to answer the bonus question, the team is denied the right to answer all or part of the bonus question, depending upon whether the bonus question is a multiple part question or a single question.
Attendance: Chapters who fail to attend the match at the designated time and location will be eliminated from the Brain Brawl Competition.
Amending: Amendment to the Brain Brawl Rules must be presented at a county meeting. The amendment(s) must be in writing accompanied with a copy for each individual school at the meeting for review. A two-thirds (2/3) majority vote of the chapters present is required for the approval of the amendment(s). A month will be given for the review of the amendment(s) before a decision is made. The changes will go into effect for the following academic year.
Observation of a Match: Audience members are required to sit behind competitors to ensure that there is no communication between audience members and competitors.
