EQ > IQ: It Takes More than Expertise to Create a Thriving School Community - Presented by Craig Davis

While school leaders possess invaluable job-specific expertise and institutional knowledge, they vary significantly in their demonstration of emotional intelligence.  This has become a critical gap in leadership practice as teachers have become increasingly fragile.  Feeling ongoing pressure and anxiety over the scrutiny they face both locally and at the state level, they may struggle to cope appropriately.  Many repeatedly call in sick, suffer from stress-related health issues (leading to an increase in medical insurance claims), rely on prescription drugs, and cope by seeking the attention, approval, and affirmation that they are missing on the job through misuse of their cell phones.  They may inappropriately use social media and cell phone texting / messaging and engage in inappropriate relationships with students (which cell phones make more accessible)—chasing dopamine relief through their devices.  Moreover, millennial employees commonly demonstrate a far lesser degree of loyalty to their organizations than have previous generations, especially if they do not feel emotionally supported, while our students are struggling with mental health issues on an unprecedented scale.  It takes an emotionally intelligent leader to move beyond the nuts and bolts of running a school to help employees and students truly thrive.

The key outcome of the session is an awareness of how better to support teachers emotionally so that attendees will be better enabled to address this essential component of leadership.
