Description

Assistant principals who made a significant impact on student achievement and growth in their first year of being a principal received systematic training and experiences in:

  • Root cause analysis of low achievement,
  • Leading the change process,
  • Monitoring for learning and achievement rather than for compliance,
  • Planning and implementing new models or concepts throughout a school, and
  • Connecting, monitoring, and evaluating high yield instructional practices to an instructional framework that matches the rigor and complexity of the curriculum.

In this Summit, we will focus on:

  1. A working definition with targeted behaviors for understanding what it means to be an instructional leader.
  2. A multi-school case study approach to raising student achievement and growth.
  3. Helping participants first identify and then overcome the most common problems in changing a school’s culture of compliance and resistance to changing current practices.
  4. Differentiating and coordinating the planning and change process between elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools.
Topics for Discussion:

1. What are the characteristics of exemplary schools?
2. How would I design a model for school change if I were the instructional leader of a school?
3. What are the personal practices and behaviors that characterize an exemplary instructional leader on a day-to-day basis?
4. What are the exemplary practices that exemplary instructional leaders have used to significantly increase student achievement and growth?
5. What is the role of conversations and accountability in efforts to raise achievement?
6. How do I conduct a root cause analysis of the achievement and growth issues of a school?
7. How do I design change?
