Florida is the leader in educational achievement gains across the country, and we are also a leader in the number of students suspended from school and the number of teacher absentees. Hear from national and state experts on changing both student and teacher attendance so our students have the best opportunity to succeed.

This event is co-sponsored by the Florida Department of Education and Osceola County Schools.

Sessions will include:

Organizing an Attendance Improvement Strategy

School leaders and educators know from experience and common sense what research confirms: showing up for class matters. Students canâ?Tt benefit from investments in high quality instruction and engaging curriculum unless they are in their classrooms. While everyone can help ensure students show up to class every day, the leadership role of a principal is irreplaceable. Chronic absence has become increasingly recognized as a significantly important early warning indicator and impact measure. Attendance Works will share inspirational examples of strategies and the universal practices that school leaders and district administrators have put in place to reduce student absenteeism.

Examine the intersection between school climate and student attendance: Known, Loved and Inspired

This session will focus on the intersection between school climate and student attendance and provide specific strategies for school leaders to utilize in developing a school climate plan. School Leaders will have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on workshop utilizing Attendance Worksâ?T tool, Scan of the Environment for Attendance Tool (SEAT), that can equip schools with information about: 1) building-level practices that may influence attendance, and 2) actionable steps that schools can take to address to improve school climate and lay the foundation for improved attendance.

Participants will:

  •    Define school climate
  •    Discuss the relationship between school climate and attendance
  •    Role-play using the SEAT to generate a school-level analysis of attendance and climate
  •    Discuss how they could utilize the information they learned during the session in their schools or districts

Team Up for Attendance

Teaming up for attendance is critical to reducing chronic absence! Principals are uniquely positioned to ensure their school community adopts a comprehensive, tiered approach to improving attendance that fits with their overall goal of promoting academic achievement. Join Attendance Works to learn about the strategic use of chronic absence data for prevention and early intervention and best practices to build will and capacity to reduce chronic absence.

Participants will:

  •    Discuss the purpose of an attendance team
  •    Define what makes an effective team
  •    Participate in a tier two root cause analysis exercise

  •    Review materials to assist them with putting in place or strengthening an existing school attendance team
