WELCOME TO FASC

WELCOME TO FASC

The Florida Association of Student Councils consists of students and their advisors throughout the state of Florida who are working together in a harmonious effort to bring about growth in student councils—to make them respected investments of time and energy  in education.

Student councils are changing.  It is the intent of the FASC to aid student councils in their quest for becoming more effective.  We are safeguarding the ideas of democracy by developing a sincere regard for law and government in the student leaders of our secondary schools.

Our affiliation with the Southern Association of Student Councils and with the National Association of Student Councils helps us bring news to the students of Florida so that they can benefit from the events happening nationwide.

The FASC is definitely a changing and growing organization.  When founded in 1938, under the name of Florida Association of Student Leaders, a total of 21 high schools held membership.  In 2006 middle schools were invited to become members.  Currently with the name of The Florida Association of Student Councils, there are nearly 200 member schools.

The original sponsoring organization of the FASC was the Florida Education Association.  In 1967, following a state wide teachers strike, high school principals asked the Florida High School Activities Association to assume the sponsorship of both the FASC.  In 1998, a citizens advisory committee created by the state legislature recommended that the Florida High School Activities Association divest itself of all non-athletic activities.  At that point the
sponsorship of the FASC went to the Florida Association of Secondary Principals, where it remains to this day. In 2012 the FASC will celebrate its 75 years of service to Florida Students.

Adult leadership of the FASC was changed in 1967 from rotating responsibilities from school to school to the appointment of an Executive Director by the sponsoring organization.

Through experience we have become more organized and are able to offer more benefits to our members than ever before.  We urge non-members to become a part of the FASC and take advantage of the opportunities available.  Any public, private or parochial middle or high school in the state of Florida is eligible to become a member.

PHILOSOPHY

The FASC is constantly working and organizing to be able to reach our goal.  Or goals are:

1.    To develop and promote unity of purpose in state student councils.
2.    To facilitate the sharing of ideas, news and projects among member schools.
3.    To encourage student participation in student council on all levels.
4.    To develop leadership, responsibility, personal growth and the ideas of democracy.
