Bay District Schools working to close the gap on teacher shortage
Back to school is right around the corner, and Bay District Schools has been working all summer to ensure that they are staffed for the upcoming school year.
This year, they’ve made significant progress closing the teacher shortage gap compared to 2024.
“We have 40 fewer openings this year than we did last year,” said Holly Buchanan, Executive Director of HR for Bay District Schools. “We’re excited that at this time we have 46 instructional positions.”
Back in June, Bay District Schools told News Channel 7 they had 156 job openings.
Since then, 110 positions have been filled.
“We do have a couple of military temporary certificates,” said Buchanan, “We have also partnered with TPG, which is our cultural exchange teachers; we have nine cultural exchange teachers.”
Anyone interested in teaching is required to have taken a subject area exam and passed all the sections, or have a statement of eligibility.
Buchanan says that, along with teachers, they are also hiring support staff, including bus drivers, paraprofessionals, substitute teachers, custodians, and maintenance staff.
Bay district schools share that they are excited to be one step closer to closing the teacher shortage gap.
“It’s super exciting to know that we are one step closer to making sure all of our classrooms are filled going into the start of the school year, said Buchanan, “that is always our goal and our focus in the summertime.”
School will officially start on August 11th.
