More Volusia County Schools employees will see salary increases in 2024-25 school year

Volusia County Schools and Volusia United Educators Support settled their contract Tuesday and, if approved, more district employees will see their salaries increase this year.

The contract includes the following agreements, according to a district press release:

Health insurance contributions will increase from $565 per month to $605.
Salary packages will increase, which includes a step on the salary schedule.
Translation supplements will increase from $100 to $500.
Pay for speech paraprofessionals will increase $0.50 per hour.

Ratification will occur the week of Sept. 16 and then the agreement will go before the Volusia County School Board for approval at its Sept. 24 meeting, according to the press release.

“I want to say thank you to our district bargaining team, to our VUE Support bargaining team, and also to our board for your support as always,” Superintendent Carmen Balgobin said at Tuesday’s board meeting.

And when VUE President Elizabeth Albert addressed the board Tuesday, she started by saying, “This is a very great day for us.”

“This truly was a collaborative partnership between both entities coming together to make life better and to provide improvements for support personnel,” Albert continued. “The movement to … put money into the health insurance premium contribution — that really is going to make a difference. And I want to thank you, all five of you, for getting that done because that's a big deal, and it is very much appreciated.”

Additional salary adjustments

At its Tuesday meeting, the board also approved a 3% salary increase for school-based administrators.

The motion — made by Carl Persis and seconded by Ruben Colón — passed unanimously.

“Sometimes, we have to wait a long time to get this, and so, I’m glad that we’re able to do that sooner rather than later for our school based administrators, …” Colón said. “They’re always available whenever we need them … I know their job goes way beyond the regular day.”

Persis agreed, saying, “I’m happy that they’re getting this salary adjustment.”

That same evening, the board also approved a 3% salary increase for non-bargaining employees at level 10 and above.

The motion — made by Anita Burnette and seconded by Jessie Thompson — passed unanimously.

Stephanie Workman, the district’s executive director of human resources payroll and employee benefits, confirmed to board Chair Jamie Haynes that both school-based administrators and employees at level 10 and above will see their increases beginning with their Sept. 30 paychecks, and they will receive their retroactive pay Oct. 15.

The decisions come after the board’s July 30 decision to provide district-based employees at Level 9 and below with a 3% raise in the 2024-25 school year.
