No layoffs expected as Marion County School Board members vote to increase class sizes

Industry,

No layoffs are expected in Marion County as school board members vote to increase class sizes and transfer impacted employees to fill other vacancies.

Class sizes will increase for each grade level by two students.

The board also voted to reduce the number of paraprofessionals from two to one in some exceptional education classes.

Board members voted unanimously on the revised plan, but are hopeful funding will allow for a return to standard class sizes in the future.

“I am proud of the work that we’ve done to do the best we can with the cards that we’ve been dealt. And I look forward to problem-solving how we can make improvements for next year,” Dr. Sarah James, a Marion County School Board member, stated.

The board also congratulated member Allison Campbell for being named president-elect of the Florida School Board’s association, starting next July.
