A Florida State House of Representatives member has filed a bill related to use of wireless communications devices on public school campuses.

House Bill 949 was filed Monday by Rep. Demi Busatta, who represents a part of Miami-Dade County.

HB 949 would prohibit students from using wireless communication devices, like a cell phone, during the school day.

The bill would also allow school districts to designate locations within the school building for students to use wireless communications devices during the school day under certain circumstances.

The law would give teachers authority to establish classroom rules for wireless devices in order to manage student behavior.

The bill requires each school district to implement rules governing the use of a wireless communications device by a student while the student is on school property or in attendance at a school function.

Rules must be established to govern designated locations within school buildings where a student may use their wireless device at the permission of a school administrator.

If the bill becomes law, it will go into effect on July 1.
