New school year brings reading training requirement for some Florida teachers
By Cody Butler
Some Florida teachers will need new training before the school year starts as part of a statewide push to boost student reading scores.
According to the latest national report card, scores dropped last year for fourth, eighth, and twelfth-grade students. Lawmakers are trying to turn things around and now there’s a new requirement for teachers who work with struggling readers.
“Anybody who requires intensive reading services—whoever is teaching them must have a reading endorsement or a micro-credential,” Rep. Dana Trabulsy, R-Fort Pierce, said.
Teachers looking to get the new endorsement will have options on how to get it, including online programs.
